ICE N'ICE GLASSES

Mixology: technique, glasses and characteristics

Mixology is the art of creating unique and personalized cocktails, artfully combining fresh and high quality ingredients.

This practice is becoming increasingly popular all over the world. A trend that has made it possible to refine mixing techniques, with more and more professional bartenders dedicating themselves to creating innovative and surprising drinks.

Knowledge, competence and creativity are the basis of the "Mixologist", the new "Barman Mixology" who mixes and experiments with raw materials from all over the world to create super original cocktails.

Origins of Mixology

This practice has ancient roots dating back to ancient Greece and Rome, where alcoholic beverages were mixed with herbs and spices for medicinal purposes.

However, modern mixology originated in the United States during Prohibition in the 1920s and 1930s. Around this time, clandestine bartenders began creating sophisticated cocktails to mask the taste of the bootlegged booze.

Mixology as we know it today "moves" its first steps at the beginning of the 19th century in New York: it is here that a barman began to mix some types of liqueurs, creating original proposals that became famous cocktails and which quickly spread throughout the world world.

Today, mixology has become a refined and popular art: professional bartenders use advanced techniques such as dry mixing, carbonation and maceration to create incredible cocktails.

Additionally, mixology has evolved to include unusual ingredients such as exotic fruits, handcrafted spirits, and rare spices. This has led to the creation of new styles of cocktails such as tiki, molecular mixology and farm-to-table.

Mixology is not only an art form but also a growing industry. Bars and restaurants around the world now offer elaborate and personalized cocktail menus, attracting ever more demanding customers.

Mixology techniques

Mixology requires in-depth knowledge of ingredients and cocktail preparation techniques.

Bartenders must be able to balance different flavors and create unique combinations, using tools such as shakers, blenders and blenders.

To become an expert mixologist, you need to master some fundamental techniques:

  • Measuring ingredients: each ingredient must be dosed with precision to ensure the right balance of flavours

  • Mixing: the ingredients must be mixed evenly to avoid separation of the liquids

  • Shaking: this technique involves using a shaker to mix the ingredients and cool the cocktail

  • Straining: after shaking, the cocktail is filtered through a strainer to eliminate any impurities or pieces of fruit

  • Garnish: finally, the cocktail is decorated with a garnish, such as a slice of lemon or a sprig of mint.

Importance of Ingredients

Ingredients are fundamental to mixology, as they determine the flavor and quality of the cocktail.

The bartenders must choose fresh and high quality ingredients, such as freshly picked fruit, aromatic herbs and exotic spices.

Furthermore, it is important that mixologists know the characteristics of liqueurs, to always obtain the maximum effect.

The Art of Presentation

Presentation is another important aspect of mixology, as a well-presented cocktail can be even more inviting.

Bartenders use creative decorating techniques to make their cocktails visually appealing and inviting.

Mixology: cocktail glasses

There is a fundamental element that has been conceived for every type of drink: the cocktail glasses!

They are as important as the ingredients and play a key role in mixology because they allow a cocktail to be tasted correctly.

Metti in risalto

The most common glass for cocktails is the low tumbler, also known as Old fashioned, Rocks glass or Lowball. It is a glass with a cylindrical shape, straight, rounded on the bottom. It is used for short drinks, such as Negroni, or for drinks prepared with few ingredients.

The tulip glass or cup is instead ideal for cocktails such as Martini. It has a V shape, a long stem and a circular base

Metti in risalto

The Coupe glass, on the other hand, is ideal for cocktails shaken and served cold, such as Daiquiri: it is easy to hold and holds the drink even when the glass wobbles.

Metti in risalto

The Margarita cup has a stem and wide cup and can have different sizes. Allows the use of salt or sugar rim. It is a variant of the Champagne Coupe, often used for champagne or sparkling wines.

Metti in risalto

The highball glass (or tall tumbler) is ideal for long drinks or fizz cocktails, generally not particularly alcoholic cocktails. This is the glass of choice for serving double whisky

Metti in risalto

The medium Tumbler (or Collins) is a straight, cylindrical glass with a slightly rounded shape, ideal for medium drinks such as the Caipirinha and the Mojito, or for cocktails served with the addition of soda, such as the Americano
